Chlorine dioxide has been used by large food and beverage plants in Canada as an effective disinfectant for many years. It is highly effective in the removal of biofilms. Biofilms are an ideal environment for dangerous pathogens to grow and recontamination can occur very quickly if the biofilm is not completely removed.
Most sanitizers and disinfectants are unable to penetrate or remove biofilms especially where there is a headspace. Since chlorine dioxide is a gas it reaches areas that are not wetted in a closed environment.
